In honor of the various Femslash events that popped up this February, I figured I'd go with the theme for the pairings prompts. :D I picked two of my favorites.

Managed to finish my [community profile] smallfandomfest prompt early this morning (only 2 hours late...).

Signed up for the Fresh Femslash Salad Bar, figured I'd try my hand at it. If anyone has a particular femslash pairing they want to see (and you know I ship it or just ask, you never know - I haven't finished updating that list), feel free to request a pairing. I'm not quite sure what pairings I'll do, but that would be helpful to narrow it down.

Week 1 of the DCU Femslash February Comment Fest has started which is focused on drabble/short form, angst, and/or rarepair.

Wrote up a post at [community profile] supergirl_tv about current challenges/events happening, feel free to let me know if I missed any. I'm going to try do that monthly, but who knows.

Also did a "First Kiss" prompt at basically all my communities that I run.

Finished my Hunting Party icons for [community profile] tvmovie20in20 - shockingly early! I of course had to use Nick Wechsler's character Oliver for the "Space" prompt in honor of the first role I knew him from Kyle from Roswell. I used also a lot more textures than I normally do with this set so hopefully they turned out ok. XD Seriously if anyone starts watching the show and enjoys it, please let me know! It's a really small fandom so the more the merrier.

[community profile] holly_poly went live earlier today, and my gift this year was a lovely Baldur's Gate 3 F/F/F longfic. 💕

Let's begin with What Massachusetts schoolchildren came up with as names for their snowplows, which have some very delightful puns in them. (I also wonder if some of them were submitting "Abolish ICE" as something, and it might have been rejected for being too political.)

If you are looking for a single spot to find good organizations to support the resistance against the occupation of the State of Minnesota, Stand with Minnesota will help you find places that can use your spare resources. Their testimonies tell you about what life in Minnesota is currently like during this occupation, and they have news outlets and spaces to keep yourself informed of the real situation happening, rather than parroted lies and talking points dreamed up by an administration that desperately needs control of a narrative if they want to convince us that Minnesota has once again gone rogue in some way.

They're linked in Naomi Kritzer's guide about how to help Minnesota and prepare your own communities for your turn at the invasion. Additionally, the guide for helping from inside the cities.

Understand that abolition is not "better training," it is not "reduced funding," it is not "the system is working, but these actors have decided not to follow the system." Abolition is the need to completely get rid of a thing, because it is toxic to the population, and the situation we are currently in is because we have not yet managed abolition of state structures, or state-supported structures, the encourage violence against not-white people.

A lot about Minnesota, in its ways and nuances, but also about other things in the United States and abroad )

Last out, A community legend in FromSoft's Elden Ring: A player with a request to solo a difficult boss, asking to be summoned in, who wears nothing but a pot on their head and wielding two katanas.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have decided the Oscars, including all of the pre-show coverage, will be exclusively streamed on YouTube starting in 2029.

A single rubber dick from a box of discount sex toys 1, the extremely fragile masculinity that resulted in violence and attacks on those who distributed the single rubber dick in their direction, 0.

And, at the very end, a letter signed by more than 400 millionaires and billionaires asking the governments of the world to tax them appropriately so they can provide revenue for the rest of the world to have a good standard of living.

Pondering the Rule of Cool

I went on a loooong walk and it felt SO NICE!! It quietened my mind a lot, too. It's possible I've been going a little bit stir-crazy because the weather has been so dreadful for weeks, and going for a stroll any longer than a short burst hasn't really been possible in too long.

Enjoy this picture of a walk I did.... last year, elsewhere, lol. We're really into the not so pleasant season at the moment. I guess I should have been on the lookout for nice naked branches to take a picture of, maybe?! But I was just soooo happy to stretch my legs properly for a few hours I forgot to look. Saw many happy puppies being walked, too!

Trees covered in ivy with sunlight by a narrow river

Reminder to self: long walks are probably part of your writing process, and also your process of being a human being.

Been reading a bunch of manga lately that truly embrace the Rule of Cool ("Why is this even happening in this way? Oh! Rule of Cool!") and was thinking maybe that's one of the things I don't let myself apply enough in my own writing. Everything must make sense and be fully justified by the worldbuilding, plot, etc! Meanwhile I translate the K-9 profiles and it's like, "yeah his jacket stays like that thanks to the power of magic" [ that world does not have magic ] and you know what, if it's not plot breaking and remains consistent once introduced, WHY NOT! WHY NOT APPLY THE RULE OF COOL!!? XD And I guess in fanfic you're playing in a sandbox that's probably already embraced that in some form.

Anyway, just peacefully reflecting!! And plotting to keep an eagle eye on the weather reports so I don't miss any wandering opportunities coming my way, haha.

Baldur's Gate 3: Lilith

[personal profile] settiai
When it comes to Baldur's Gate 3, I try to have at least three playthroughs going at any given time. Specifically, I try to have one playthrough (or more) that's currently in each of the three acts of the game, so that I can switch to a different one if I need something new. Once my Act 1 playthrough reaches Act 2, I'll start a new one. (Or sometimes I'll start a new one before then. I don't always have just three playthroughs going at once. Three is the minimum number.)

On that note, Taviana is currently in Act 3 while Apophis is currently in Act 2. Which means I also have an Act 1 playthrough going right now as well.

Meet Lilith, my resist Dark Urge.

Minor spoilers for Act 1, but nothing for later ones.

More under the cut. )

The few notes I took during my not-really-pacing-check aren't taking as long as the previous chunky edits to integrate (THANK GOD), which means I'm also speed-running through my Having Feelings About The Manuscript cycle... *sigh* I was taking a few notes for a post as I went (seeing how much better it is than before! happy feelings!) but I've already moved on from happy to things to be sad/disappointed about.

Audience: "Wow, you're about 70% into the manuscript and thinking it's bad? Is this where we're supposed to act surprised???"

Like, it does help to know that I literally go through this cycle every time whether writing or editing, but the feelings are still being felt and kind of suck regardless T_T

Here's what the voice at the back of my mind says:

You're enjoying the story because you can see that it's better "than before" but that doesn't mean it's good. It'll probably still look like baby's crappy first draft to someone coming in fresh. You've also had over 2 years to get used to the worst flaws, the ones that can't be fixed because they are load-bearing in the story.

Anyway!

As always the first couple of days were a bit rough while I adjusted to a new way of doing things. I've landed on: I take the written down squiggled notes I made and add them as comments to my Scrivener file (unless they're super straightforward/require 0 thinking, then I just make the change). Then I go through these comments scene by scene, deleting them as I integrate the feedback. In my BuJo I have many many little boxes for every scene that I can tick when I'm done :D Each chapter is about 4-6 scenes so it helps with giving a sense of progress and make the process feel a bit less overwhelming. I do love my ticky boxes.

Vaguely considering adding chapter titles because a few chapters would really benefit, but some others are more awkward and I don't know that I really want to have to find 10+ more titles /o\

I'm still writing ficlets here and there as a pressure valve from editing :D However, there's a mindset thing I'm noticing that I don't like at all:

Me about to write fic: "This should be FUN! If it's not FUN, then you failed!! :D"
Me about to write origfic: "This should be GOOD! If it's not GOOD, then you failed!! D:"

I don't like that. It should all be fun, like, I should always slip into writing mode with a lighter spirit. I don't want my own worlds to feel like a chore, full of associated pressure. So, something I'll definitely want to address, though I'm not too sure how yet.

Challenge #15

How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

I intend to keep going back and checking out entries when I'm not doing something else, and leaving comments, and trying to build that community and see interesting things that people have posted. It probably won't go that quickly, and I may not make it all the way through in a timely manner. But I'll try.

It was fine, which is not a complaint. )

I feel like it's very hard for me to describe my creative processes.  Maybe it's because I haven't spent much time actually thinking about what makes them happen.  Maybe it's because I'm so used to them that there doesn't seem to be anything worth talking about.  Maybe it's because 99% of my process is extremely internal, just turning the idea over and over like a rotisserie chicken until it's ready.  Which, I mean, isn't not my process, so I guess that's descriptive???

Maybe if I break it down by types.

For fics--specifically fics written for fun that actually have a plot and aren't just elaborate set-ups for jokes:
There's a lot of poking at a plot to see if it's worth being Fic Plot or just Fun Daydream Idea.  Pretty much all my fics start out as Fun Daydream Ideas anyway, but if something keeps coming up and I can see the story being written--I mean this literally; I see the sentences in front of me and will start rewriting/rewording them as I go--then it's time to start writing them down.

For fics that are basically elaborate set-ups for jokes:
A punchline gets me, or a pun, or a meme format makes me think "how could I put this into [fic universe]?" and then that's it.  My like my full fics, I start writing and rewriting the idea over and over in my head.  Sometimes I'll swap in different characters for whatever places they need to be.  For example, I'm being haunted by the "Robert and Barbara Wire" Tumblr post, and I have a different word in mind but using that format, so I've been trying to figure out which of the Batfamily I want to use for each speaker.  So, like all of them, I keep turning it around and trying new characters in different roles until I find what I like.

Fandom related posts, not fics:
Pretty much the same as above.  I don't write a lot of serious meta about my fandoms because that's just not my preferred way to fan, so most of my fandom posts are jokes.  I will say, though, that I tend to work these the same way I work my stand-up comedy bits:  I try it out in my head to play around with it and see if there's a funnier way to do the bit.  If I can't decide what version works best, I start inflicting it upon testing it out with my friends and family.  Usually, I'll start IRL with my mom (as she knows at least of most of my fandoms) or a friend via text.  Then I might move to a Discord friend, test it there.  Once I think it's got the right feel of what I want, then I'll usually share it on Tumblr (which is pretty much my only social media presence nowadays).

And there you have it!  Or some of it, at least.

Challenge #15

How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

I can't believe it's over already!  I will say this year didn't go as well as past years, I didn't complete every challenge, but I did complete most of them.  I think the ones I bounced off the most were the "talk about yourself" ones, I just wasn't in the right head space for them.  I find those types of questions awkward anyways, I never know what to say.  Like if you asked me to talk about my writing, or shows I like, etc, I can always find something to talk about, but stuff like "what do you like about yourself?" and my mind goes blank.  I do like myself, I'm just not good about selling myself.  I also, I made very few recs this year, in past years it felt like most of my posts were recs.

Anyways, I enjoyed myself and will probably be back again next year.

Warnings/Enticements/Triggers: Once again, non-graphic reference to child-murder, cannibalism

Summary: Obi-Wan Kenobi has never known it, but he has always been the Force’s Champion, destined to suffer infinite sadness in defense of the Light. On his last turn on the wheel, responsibility for The Chosen One, the false child of prophecy, had been thrust upon him with no warning, and Darkness held the upper hand.

But this time, the Force has marshaled its power and will protect its Champion until the time is right, no matter how long Obi-Wan has to wait and how much he has to suffer.

Or,

Obi-Wan is reborn as a twelve-year old.

He wakes up on a slavers’ ship, with all of his prior life’s memories intact, and he’s bound for Tatooine with a Force-inhibitor collar around his neck, a bomb implanted in his spine, and no way of knowing what state of the Galaxy is in.

Just another day in the life of the Force’s Champion.

Chapter Summary: While the kitten-shaped Avatars of the Force distract Oban from the Darkness, they don’t make him forget what has happened to him. As Obi-Wan spends time with Oban, he finds him a heartbreaking mix of typical little boy and oddly mature ghost.

For his part, Oban is just glad to be back in the Temple. He just wants to know what has happened to all of his clan mates, even though they must have grown up and become knights by now.
