I was feeling nostalgic, so I pulled up Road Not Taken and played it for a little while earlier. It took a bit to get back into the swing of things, but I started to remember some of the hidden details and combinations after a while.

It's been ages since the last time I played, and I'd forgotten just how much I love it. It's so helpful if I want to turn off my brain for a little while. I can't believe it's been over a decade since it was first released.

On very rare occasion, I've posted pictures of my beadwork here. I don't know why, but I'm always reluctant to share that part of my life on Dreamwidth. Maybe because DW is for fannish things, and beading has always been very much IRL.

Since a number of staff at Unnamed Nonprofit are either Christian or Jewish, they've announced that they're closing the office at lunchtime today. Which, you know, as someone who isn't celebrating a holiday at the moment? That's still a nice little treat for me.

I finished my fourth Dragon Age: The Veilguard playthrough last night, so I think that I'm going to pick back up with my fifth one (which is in Act 2 right now) for a bit and then maybe switch to Baldur's Gate 3. D&D is cancelled again tonight because it's the DM's spouse's birthday, so I can properly settle in to play for hours which is something I haven't had the time to do in ages.

Look what I found on my friends list!

A. and I finished Person of Interest tonight.

Now that I've finished it, I can dive into the wiki and the fanfic without worrying about getting spoiled. I'll probably even write some fanfic of my own — based on the parts of the show I enjoyed most and the style of fanfic I tend to write, expect my fanfic to be "season 3 forever."

At any rate, I really enjoyed the series, I simultaneously wish there had been more of it and am glad that it didn't go on so far that it wore out its welcome, and I recommend it to those of you who haven't seen it!

Let us begin with the formal dissolution of NaNoWriMo, after several bad decisions, scandals, and questionable alliances had many of the participants moving away from the official forums or having official affiliations with the group.

[personal profile] musesfool gives us a poem from Barbara Jane Reyes that is a prayer to the Goddess of Lost Things, but the things that are lost are not merely the things that are physical, and several of the lost things are misplaced at a time where they are needed.

Social media influencers and thrill-seekers are still attempting to make contact with isolated peoples that have expressed a wish to stay isolated. Because the clicks and the potential revenue are worth more than the violation of international treaty, right? Or the possibility of bringing a disease with you that the isolated people have no defense against.

Obscenely wealthy person plans on going to another country because she's no longer getting a tax-preferred status, tries to soften the headline by claiming she'd be happy to pay more tax to maintain her preferred status.

There are burgeoning services for Catholic parishes, dioceses, and schools, to help make sure there isn't financial malfeasance and to give transparency and communication between clergy and laity to make those places work better for everyone. A far cry, indeed, from the Church that expected the laity to attend, say the appropriate prayers at the appropriate time, and otherwise just trust that the men who were priests and administrators were going to do well with it, even in the face of evidence to the contrary.

There are a lot of people out there who want the "right" people to have more children, and to have designer babies, and while many of them are also allegiants of eugenetics, people who decry the presence of women in the workplace (or doing anything other than popping out babies and raising them), and ideologies that praise white culture over any and all others, most of them also don't have a thought in their heads about what it would take to actually successfully raise all those kids. They've gotten to "Well, women should do it, because the only women we want are women who will enjoy having and raising children," and they think that will be sufficient as a national policy. Unfortunately for them, history did not begin in the 1950s, and therefore what they believe is timeless and traditional is actually quite newfangled and not very good for a lot of the population.

The National Health Service of the UK has announced that emergency contraception will be available at all community pharmacies for no charge, so as to try and alleviate some of the effects of variations in access and cost. This goes with plenty of other contraception available for no charge through the NHS.

Microsoft employees who protested the company's involvement in allowing Israel to prosecute its war against Gaza received retaliation for their act, either being ordered to retire a few days earlier or fired from their position.

Your semi-monthly dose of U.S. politics, technology hacks, and people behaving poorly inside )

Last out for tonight, the trend of staying and living at your parents house for longer has been happening for quite some time, admittedly because there's less pressure for someone to leave and get an education, or to leave and put themselves into service in some other household. The people who are gung-ho about repealing child labor laws are probably hoping they can point to this kind of research and call it natural for children to go to work, never mind all the laws that are in place to prevent the exploitation of children and to make sure that they get enough sleep to go to their required schooling the next day.

And something to make you smile - a project to connect children to elders in Saidosho by turning the elders into trading card characters has worked extraordinarily well, with an entire TCG developing of these various community members and their skills.

In an article in the March 2025 issue of Multilingual magazine, I learned that while there's a sizable minority in Spain who speak Catalan, very few of those people are monolingual in Catalan. Therefore, it's common for Spanish publishers to buy both the Spanish and Catalan translation rights for a book but only produce a Spanish edition. They thus get most of the Catalan readers (because most of them also read Spanish) without the expense of producing a Catalan edition and without the chance that someone else will produce a Catalan edition and cut into their sales. This strikes me as yet another of those things that's a best practice within the "rules" of capitalism while at the same time being a generally scummy thing to do.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Banter

[personal profile] settiai
I found a perfect place to do some banter farming in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, so I settled in to max out all of the possible conversations between various pairs of characters off-and-on over the past almost-a-week before starting endgame in my most recent playthrough.

There was so much dialogue that I've never encountered before. Even with characters who I've frequently had together in my party in previous playthroughs, I was getting to conversations that I never heard in previous ones. There's just so much potential banter that's never played for me because I didn't have two specific characters in the party together for long enough, and it was lovely to hear it all. And I'm sure there's still more banter that I've missed that's only available earlier in the game.

Nothing really spoilery, but under the cut to be safe. )

It definitely makes some of the potential choices in the game even more bittersweet, hearing just how close some of the team members are to each other based on their conversations and teasing of each other.

Let's try for two positive posts in a row, shall we?

I meant to post about this when I found out a month or so ago, but I completely forgot due to all of the chaos going on at the time. It turns out that Unnamed Nonprofit is doing an experiment this year where we get the entire week off for July 4. Once we close on Friday, June 27, we won't be back until Monday, July 7, so we'll have a whole nine days off in a row.

We always have that week-and-a-half off at the end of the year in December, where we're closed for the holidays before the super busy season starts at the beginning of January, and apparently the new president was impressed by how much it seemed to increase productivity at the beginning of the year. So because of that, he's testing to see if giving us a paid break twice a year instead of just once a year seems to give another mid-year boost.

I'm probably still going to be working a little, just to keep an eye out for emergencies like I did at the end of the year, but the summer tends to be significantly slower so I'm hoping it won't be more than an hour total over the course of the entire week - and it would five minutes here, five minutes there, etc.

Considering my Wednesday D&D group has chosen that week for our in-person D&D game, the timing is perfect. I'll have a whole five days of hiding from human contact to help build up my spoons before the long weekend of lots and lots and lots of human interaction.

Hello, and thank you for signing up to write for this exchange.

General DNW: Please avoid nonconsensual sexual contact and on page child abuse.

General Likes: Slice of Life, Recovery, Post Canon. Neurodiverse/Disabled/Queer folks worked into the worldbuilding (POV characters are welcome if thats where your muse takes you). Gender as a social concept (this can include discussions of sex related expectations inherent to a persons position in the narrative, trans headcanons, gender bending, A/B/O, etc)

General Mixed Bag: PWPs, Complete AUs,

Fandom: ワンパンマン | One-Punch Man
Genos & Saitama (One-Punch Man)
Medium: Fanfiction - Freeform

I love Saitama in all his apathetic and kinda illogical glory. He's living off the grid and keeping a decent house with a strong budgeting instinct. But never noticed he was supposed register as a working hero. He doesn't initially like being followed by Genos as his disciple but also doesn't have any actual plan to escape the relationship.

Kills without much concern, while at the same time having a much higher awareness of the consequences to civilians than most of the other heroes we see, including Genos at the start.

Genos has such an adorable hero worship crush. Will he ever stop blowing himself up?

How do they change to better help each other in general and in achieving their goals.

Duo Maxwell/Heero Yuy (GW)
Chang Wufei/Duo Maxwell (GW)
Medium: Fanfiction - Freeform

One of my oldest fandoms. I love how different each of the boys povs/motivations are despite working together towards the larger goal. During or post war are both great. Would love some more cultural discussions of the different colonies. Or some sick/wounded fic of them taking care of each other.

Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood & Manga
Greed/Ling Yao (FMA:B)
Medium: Fanfiction - Freeform

These two have such an interesting relationship. And Greed in general has a very interesting take on relationships and ownership. I'd love to see something where Greed survives. But anything character centric about these two would be great.

Fandom: 乙女ゲームの破滅フラグしかない悪役令嬢に転生してしまった… - 山口悟 | My Next Life as a Villainess - Yamaguchi Satoru (Light Novels)
Maria Campbell/Katarina Claes (My Next Life as a Villainess)

Katarina's unfailing ability to take over romantic storylines and sweep a girl off her feet. While remaining so oblivious. This is a great fandom for general worldbuilding. Or an A/U sapphic meet cute.

Hey, I have an actual positive post for once!

My Wednesday D&D group has been actively trying to have an in-person game every year or two, since we're all in the US, unlike my Friday game, and 3.5 out of the 7 of us are already in the DC area, unlike either my Friday or Sunday games. (The 0.5 comes from Zooey since she splits her time between here and Montana.)

Anyway, we had our first in-person weekend in August 2022. We weren't able to pull one off in 2023, but we did manage to have one last year in July 2024 just before I moved into the hotel. And we've just finalized another in-person weekend for this year!

More details under the cut for those who don't really care. )

I'm going to be exhausted and so very much peopled out when I go back to work that Monday, but it will be worth it. Especially since it looks like everyone can make it this time. The last two in-person weekends, one of the players - Hannah - hasn't been able to come in person. She ended up calling in via Discord, and we had a whole elaborate set-up so she could see the map and such. She doesn't have any prior plans this year, though, so she's actually going to get to play in person with us.

So unless something changes, it looks like all seven of us will be there this time around. 🤞🏻

Just discovered today that a cough and flu-like symptoms, which I've been experiencing for the past few days, are a fairly common side effect of the antiseizure med I'm on. Mere words cannot express how unthrilled I am by this. I want to post things other than my medical problems, and to read the things that you all post and leave you comments on them, but right now I have neither the time nor the energy to do so. But please, know that the desire is there: If you've done well recently, consider me as having congratulated you. Conversely, if things have gone badly for you, consider me as having commiserated. In the meantime, I'll actually be over here doing the bare minimum I have to do to make it through day-to-day life, then going to bed early. (Which in and of itself should tell you how badly I'm doing, given my oft-stated resentment of the need to sleep.)

Oh, the timing...

One of my D&D friends and I were talking about jury duty on Discord a few days ago. She mentioned that her parents had gotten a jury duty notice for her at their home, despite her moving out and changing her address years ago. I told her about the same thing happening to me a few years ago, despite me not living in Tennessee since 2010, and we both shook our heads at the fact that Illinois and Tennessee are both that bad at updating records.

I was apparently tempting fate.

I've mentioned before that I'm signed up for USPS Informed Delivery, since my mail goes to my P.O. Box, and I don't want to go out my way to visit the post office unless I know there's something waiting for me. I got a notification today saying that I have a letter from the Jury Commissioner waiting for me, which is almost certainly a jury duty notice.

I'm going to go to the post office after work to pick it up so that I'll know the details about when it is. I need some groceries for Aldi anyway, so I'm just going to kill two birds with one stone and take care of it all after work.
