pocketmouse: White decorative mask (winter_mask)
[personal profile] pocketmouse posting in [community profile] holly_poly
Hi guys, I'm having a lot of people emailing me saying they thought the deadline was tomorrow, and I think I may have screwed it up too in one of the posts (though it was definitely clear in the original assignments post), so I'm going to extend an across-the-board 24 hour extension, to midnight eastern time tomorrow night. Again, unless I go to bed first. But you now have 25 hours and change -- if you defaulted recently because you thought you suddenly didn't have enough time, but might be able to finish now, you can probably be reassigned, most of the recent pinch hits haven't been picked up yet (that said, if you can pinch hit, please add yourself to the list!).

Hopefully that will help.

The problem with clarity is midnight when we start converting to our own time zone. AO3 cheerily informs me that as MST, my deadline is 10 pm. What it fails to mention is that because it's midnight (which midnight?), that's 10 pm on a different date. I can't do time conversions in my head. I screw them up. I honestly checked the profile yesterday and thought reveals were Saturday night, and yet now I suspect that's really Friday night.

When I post here I try to make it a hard quantity, like x hours.

That can have its own problems, because the posts to the comm do not say which timezone they are (replies seem to show them, but not the main posts), leaving no way to calculate how long ago the "x hours to go" post was made. A link to a countdown would be less ambiguous and should eliminate the chance for math errors.

I swear by http://www.timeanddate.com because I can't do time conversions in my head either. The Time Zones box in the middle has the time zone converter, but there are all sorts of nifty things to play with, like countdown timers, which I also find useful for panicking purposes :D

(Belated, but thank you for letting me know! I was a little concerned since I'd posted but still had 'Fulfill' and 'Default' buttons showing up. This is my first exchange with moderated posting and I'd worried that I'd done something wrong/missed a ticky box somewhere/etc.)
